July 2009:
3rd July 2009

The start of the new boiler fitting. We're changing the existing system boiler and hot water tank for a new more powerfull combination boiler in order to increase the hot water pressure and run our new rain shower in the bathroom.
This is the old boiler with cover removed. It's actually a Glowworm Fuelsaver 40B (11.5kW) and will be replaced with a 24kW Baxi Duo-Tec 24HE.

Interestingly our 20 year old boiler has worked faultlessly for the last 8 years with only one service! Lets hope the new one is as reliable. Also the old boiler is less than 60% efficient, this new one is over 90%.

The old boiler is now removed. The large rectangular hole in the wall was the position of the old flue pipe which came off the back of the old boiler. Modern boilers such as our Baxi Duo-Tec have a much smaller circular flue coming from the top and as such we are unable to use this hole and it will be bricked up.

This new boiler comes with a mounting plate. You simple fix this to the wall and make your pipe connections...

... before hanging the boiler on the bracket.

The boiler is now fitted and tested. Luckily we had a downstairs toilet with a sink just on the other side of the wall that gave us easy access to a cold water feed and a drain for the condensate. We could also connect the hot water to the hot tap of the sink which then went around the house.

This is the underside of the boiler showing the pipework. There are quite a few pipes but it's not too complicated really, there are feed and return pipes for the central heating, cold water in and hot water out, a gas pipe and a condendate and overflow pipes.
Finally the old hot water cylinder has been removed from the airing cupboard. We've fitted a small radiator here to keep the cupboard warm, and we'll install some shelves for storage.
