1st February 2012
First up we're relocating this wall light in the hallway back to a ceiling light (as it was many years ago!)

As this light was once on the ceiling it's a simply job to chisel out the filler around the cable in the wall, then pull it through and back through the old hole in the ceiling and fill in the holes again.

Et voila!
Done!
"Interesting" 1980's wallpaper found behind the radiator in one of the bedrooms!
Here's a little junction box and a big problem. We were pulling up a few floorboards in the bedroom and came across this.

It's a 1.5mm cable coming from goodness knows where and going to a 15A junction box (at best) then two more 1.5mm cables each run to a socket on either side of the room.

Any of you bright sparks like to say how many things are wrong with this?? Answers tomorrow!

2nd February 2012
Not much to photograph today, lots of work and it doesn't look much different! But here's a new telephone socket in the hallway.

Here's the answers to yesterday's little wiring puzzle.
Firstly the cable should be 2.5mm not 1.5mm
The junction box should be rated at 30A minimum not 15A
And finally, aren't the sockets supposed to be on a ring main??! Oh dear, looks like we have a bit of re-wiring to do upstairs!

3rd February 2012
Lots to do today, at least it's not cold...
Yes that does say 1.2c and yes that is INSIDE the house!
Here's an idea, lets fit the thermostat in the hall and turn it up to max, perhaps that will make it feel warmer!
Ahh, the skirting boards have arrived.

53.2m of 7" high torus skirting thanks to our friends at Harrogate Timber.

6th February 2012
The new skirting boards are being fitted, this is the hallway...
...and on the stairs.
8th February 2012
We're sealing and preparing the skirting boards for painting. Here are the ones in the hallway. The brown spots are knotting solution.

When using new wood that will later be painted, always use knotting solution on all the knots in the wood as this will prevent the sap leaking out and ruining your paintwork.

Also we did a bit of electrics in the loft changing a wall light into a ceiling light.
9th February 2012
More work in the hallway and landing. This is the socket on the landing. It's a bit too low as we now have larger skirting board, so it's a simple job just to cut the plaster above and raise it up. Thankfully there's enough cable (and it's on a ring-main using the correct 2.5mm cable!)
More fitting and painting of skirting boards. Here are the ones in the hallway.
10th February 2012
More painting (not that you'd really notice!)
And more skirting boards. This are the ones in the kitchen.
13th February 2012
Right time to look at the electrical wiring upstairs. After much head-scratching and floorboard-lifting we have a diagram of how it's presently wired and the news is not good. The diagram looks less like a ring-main and more like tree-roots! In fact this single 30A junction box powers most of the upstairs sockets.
Contary to what we thought earlier there's no ring-main at all, the sockets that do have two wires going to the (as you would expect to see in a ring-main) are in fact a spur off to another socket!

Whilst this was fine in the 1970's when the house was re-wired it just simply won't do now! There's only one thing for it, we need to completely rewire the place with two new ring mains, one upstairs and one downstairs.

15th February 2012
We're making a start on the re-wire. Since none of the existing cabling will be used, we are not going to disturb this for now. Instead we'll add new sockets and wiring before removing the old system.

Here we are cutting into the wall for the new double sockets. To make things easier, where possible we've added another socket on the other side of the wall, then we can just wire them through (hence the hole here!)

17th February 2012
We're getting on well with the upstairs re-wire. All the old sockets have been removed, but we haven't pulled all the old cabling out just yet.

We've added almost all of the new double socket boxes now. There's a short length of conduit hidden in the wall which allows us to skim round the new boxes and feed the wires up later.

21st February 2012
Ok, time for a quick update on our progress...

We've been concentrating our efforts over the last few days on the upstairs. New socket boxes are in place in all rooms with just two more to add to bedroom 1, then we can start wiring them together. The boxes have been plastered around and we have fitted the skirting boards (as seen here in bedroom 3)

Meanwhile in bedroom 2 the skirting boards are done and we've prepared the walls ready for painting. As it's bare plaster we will be doing a "base coat" before proceeding with the final colour at a later date.

22nd February 2012
We feel like a bit of painting today so we've done all the skirting and window frames in bedrooms 2 and 3 and on the landing.
