2nd March 2009
Various small jobs today... the pipes have been boxed in. We've fitted earth bonding to all the boiler pipes. We have also fitted the bathroom door to open into the hallway.

It's all coming together now! The kitchen is completed... and the central heating has been run at full pressure for the first time. That's just waiting for the boiler to be signed off now.

The next job is fitting the lounge gas fire...

4th March 2009
We had a little accident today (don't laugh!) We were applying a coat of varnish to the new fire surround and knocked the pot of varnish off the work bench. Most of the varnish ended up all over the floor, and on the wall 8 feet away with the furthest being found a full 13 feet from the initial impact! Oops! After a good clean up and two more coats of paint on the wall you'll never know!

We've started bricking up the fireplace to reduce the opening. We're using special aerated bricks which look like normal breeze blocks but weigh considerably less and you can cut them with a wood saw so they are easy to work with.
|

Here's the first trial fitting of the fire surround. It's had two coats of varnish and needs a third. For some reason we seem to have run out of varnish... can't think why!

The opening in fireplace has been reduced and is now the correct size for the gas fire.

The gas fire surround is now fitted and just needs the skirting boards fitting either side of it. The gas fire will be installed later.

We've been enjoying the sunshine outside too and have finished the plumbing for the en-suite toilet and shower.

We've been working hard glossing the downstairs. The pipework is finished off for the en-suite shower too, so we should get that fitted soon.

The en-suite shower is now fitted and just needs a little bit of finishing off. We've been doing a lot of painting downstairs and now just have a little bit left in the lounge, so that will be completed tomorrow too.

It looks like we have taken a step backwards today, but it's not too bad! The gas appliances were tested for the first time today... one failed and three passed! The boiler, hob and dining room fire are all connected up, but the lounge fire is no good!
We were sold the gas fire and surround as a set, but we've discovered (too late!) that the surround is only for electric fires. We'll be taking the matter up with the supplier, but in the meantime the only option is to cap off the gas supply to the
lounge and fit an electric fire.
On the plus side we've finished all the painting now and various other small jobs.

We've exchanged the gas fire in the lounge for an electric one. It's a shame because all the work fitting the flue liner and bricking the fireplace up is wasted, but at least it keeps the Corgi man happy!

It's been a hive of activity today!
Something we've completely overlooked is fitting a handrail for the staircase... so here it is!
Our gas fitter has been testing the boiler and for the first time we've run the boiler and had hot water and central heating! And apart from a slight leak under the boiler (oops!) it all works fine.

The underlay has arrived, and we spent all weekend clearing the place ready for the carpets on Tuesday... will we be ready in time???

Most of the underlay is down now with just the stairs to do... The fitters will be here at 8:30 tomorrow morning!

Finished!!! Well just about... there are a few little jobs to do but it's time to welcome the new tenants in.
